A few months ago I picked up !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! for the MINI and sold the TPMS that came with them as I didn’t need them. When I had the new wheels installed, the tire shop I used tested them and said they were working fine. Just got a message today from the guy I sold them too who just got around to having them installed and says they don’t work at all. My best guess is that the internal batteries died within that time. While I don’t want to be a dick and tell him tough shit, I also don’t feel all that responsible because at the time I knew they were working and would have no way of knowing their remaining battery life. I’m thinking of offering to refund him half of the purchase price as a decent middle ground but I was curious as to what you guys thought of the whole scenario. Thanks!

MINI for your time.

You sold the TPMS a few months ago?

That’s not your problem at all. It’s like trying to return two month old strawberries because they spoiled before you got to eat them.

Depends on how much you want to go back on the forum.

I was a forum merchant at one point, and was machining replicas of a pretty popular out of production item. I took $1600 in deposits and spent close to $1200 on material and tooling. Well at some point the CNC lathe I was using ran into problems and the shop wasn’t eager to fix it since they had a different CNC lathe in an area I didn’t have access to. So I couldn’t deliver the parts. But I had a sparkling reputation and it was a community I enjoyed, so guess who took a $1200 bath. By the way, I was in college. The point of this being, if being a good guy is important to you, then that’s fine - and people have certainly suffered worse

So. If you’re very well established you have nothing to worry about for just TPMS sensors. If you’re new and hate it, then let PayPal figure it out. If you’re new and trying to get some cred, then either split it or ask for the parts back or something. If they’re not willing to ship the parts back to you, that should be very telling.

I will say there’s no way they all 4 went bad if they were all working 3 months ago. The BMW/Mini TPMS sensors don’t report unless the wheel is spinning. The wheel HAS to be rotating for the battery to make a connection, and for it send it’s signal. Could one of the batteries go bad from sitting? Maybe. No way all 4 are bad though. He probably got the TPMS light, and just assumes they don’t work period. If he goes to Discount Tire they will scan it for free, and tell him which one is dead. I would refund him enough to buy 1 new sensor, and that’s it.

Did the buyer do any troubleshooting at all? I’d first explain how to get them working, and explain how they function. Are they being installed on a similar vehicle? Is the frequency even the right range? Are they doing something stupid like sticking them in a PCV tube?

You are in the clear. Do those sensors require the Mini tool to program them to the car?
